Four months after announcing it would build Lexington’s first Dunkin’ Donuts, Kainos Partners said it also will open one in downtown Columbia in October.
The downtown Columbia Dunkin’ Donuts will be on the first floor of 1202 Main St. — the former space of Capital Cafe.
“It will be upscale and the first in Columbia to present (Dunkin’ Donuts’) ‘Newberry Image,’” said Bart Thorne, head of Greer-based franchisee Kainos Partners.
The new concept store near the State House is part of a broader expansion by Dunkin’ Donuts, which plans to open more than 30 Midlands stores over the next five years.

The downtown location will have raised wall panels, tiled floors, granite and marble countertops and the chain’s name etched in gold on the windows.
Although the new store will be a bit fancier than the traditional Dunkin’ Donuts shops, it will carry the same menu — including coffee, pastries, breakfast and flat-bread sandwiches and small pizzas.
Also to keep with the upscale feel, the downtown Columbia store will not have a drive-through, Thorne said.
The new Lexington store will have a drive-through but will open in November — instead of this summer as first announced. The Lexington Dunkin’ Donuts will be next door to a Verizon Wireless store and Home Depot on Sunset Boulevard.
The new Columbia and Lexington Dunkin’ Donuts stores are the first of four planned for Richland and Lexington counties by early next year.
Dunkin’ Donuts also will open at Clemson Road and I-20 and at I-77 and Farrow Road, near Providence Hospital, Thorne said.
Dunkin’ Donuts already has three stores in the Columbia area.
In all, Kainos Partners will develop about 80 Dunkin’ Donuts statewide.
The planned downtown Columbia Dunkin’ Donuts is a plum for Main Street, which has had at least two businesses shutter or announce closure plans in the past three months.
