USC ranks tops on SEC honor roll

For the fourth consecutive semester, South Carolina placed the most athletes on the SEC’s academic honor roll, which the conference released Wednesday.

The news gets better: The conference — not the school — will spring for the plaques for Gamecocks’ 105 athletes who made the list in the spring.

USC’s women’s track team led the way with 23 team members on the honor roll, which requires a minimum 3.0 grade point average.

Shortstop Reese Havens, a first-round pick of the New York Mets, was one of 13 baseball players on the list, while 10 of the 12 members on the men’s golf team made it.

“Any time we perform well I think we all have to be proud,” said Raymond Harrison, the academics director for the athletic department. “One thing we’ve done since I’ve been here is raise the bar as far as academic expectations and hold the student-athletes accountable.”

Georgia was second with 96 honorees.

Harrison, 34, who was at Louisville before arriving at USC in 2006, did not realize the Gamecocks topped the chart four consecutive times.

“That’s pretty danged good,” he said. “We want to compete and one of these days we’ll do it on both levels, I guess.”

But Harrison said there is room for improvement. The Gamecocks’ most visible sports — football and men’s basketball — were last in the SEC in the most recent APR report and needed waivers to avoid penalties.

Harrison said the school’s showing on the honor roll list would take “a little of the sting” out of the APR data.

“But I don’t want the sting to go away,” Harrison said, “because that’s our motivation.”
