USC gets linebacker commitment

Linebacker Brent Singleton (6-1 204) of Plantation, Fla., committed to USC Thursday, becoming the fifth pledge for the Gamecocks' 2009 class.

Singleton also considered offers from Minnesota, Syracuse, Indiana, Miami of Ohio, Colorado State, Northern Illinois, Florida International and Central Michigan before going with USC.

"It's in the best conference," Singleton said. "They need help in backers. I'm coming in with the mind set of taking a starting job. Coach Ellis Johnson said they are glad to have me. And coach Gillespie and I have a good relationship."

Singleton, who has family in South Carolina, also is friends with Gamecock defensive back Akeem Auguste and wanted the chance to play with him. Singleton made 60 tackles last season with 20 for loss and five sacks. He feels he can excel in the Gamecocks' scheme.

"I feel like I can fit in well there," he said. "I compare myself to Jasper Brinkley a little bit."

Singleton, who also rushed for 650 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, said his commitment to the Gamecocks is a firm one.
