STARKVILLE, Miss. — Coach Sylvester Croom has announced the one-game suspension of starting free safety Derek Pegues for violating Mississippi State’s class attendance policy.
Croom said reserve linebacker Karlin Brown would also miss the Bulldogs’ Aug. 30 game at Louisiana Tech for the same violation.
Under the university’s policy, which is mandated by the SEC, four or more absences per class trigger a one-game suspension.
Pegues started 25 consecutive games for Mississippi St. and his five interceptions last year were a team best. His 75-yard fourth-quarter punt return tied an Egg Bowl game against Mississippi the team later won.
With Pegues out, sophomore Zach Smith could get the start.
Georgia left tackle injures knee. At Athens, Ga., Georgia starting left tackle Trinton Sturdivant sustained a knee injury in the team’s first scrimmage of the preseason on Monday.
Sturdivant, who started all 13 games as a freshman last season, hurt his left knee. Coach Mark Richt said the severity of the injury will be determined by tests.
“It swelled up pretty good, and we’re taking the pictures so we’ll see,” Richt said. “It’s just sad to see a guy get hurt.”
Josh Davis, a sophomore, moved up to the first-team offense following Sturdivant’s injury.
The Bulldogs had a 75-minute kicking scrimmage Monday morning at Sanford Stadium and returned in the afternoon for a two-hour workout in full pads.
Gators’ WR Murphy, CB Anderson suffer minor injuries. Florida starting receiver Louis Murphy and backup cornerback Markihe Anderson suffered injuries over the weekend that will keep them out of practice until later in the week.
Murphy suffered a sprained right ankle and Anderson suffered a sprained right wrist. Murphy was wearing a protective boot on his foot and Anderson had a soft cast on his wrist, but UF coach Urban Meyer said the injuries aren’t serious and both should return later this week.
Meyer also said receiver Percy Harvin, who has missed the past five days of practice as he recovers from offseason heel surgery, would return to practice Tuesday or Wednesday. He hasn’t practiced since Aug. 5.
