Monday Practice report: A position fit for a King

News of the day Jarriel King is still getting used to this whole offense thing.

King, one of the country’s top junior-college defensive linemen at Georgia Military, is adjusting to how the other half of the line lives. “The left tackle position is something I knew I would have to step up on,” King said Monday. “I’ll say this: It’s a weird transition because I’m so aggressive.

“Everyone’s telling me, ‘You need to calm down on the pass blocking. You’re too aggressive. They’ll come to you. Stop trying to go to everybody.’”

King is in a three-man competition at left tackle with Hutch Eckerson and Quintin Richardson. (Returning starter Jamon Meredith will miss the first two games due to an NCAA ruling and could play guard when he returns.)

USC coach Steve Spurrier is eager to see King scrimmage tonight after the 6-foot-7, 285-pounder missed Saturday’s scrimmage with a hamstring injury.

It will be another step on the learning curve for King, who had a coach tell him offensive line was more of a thinking man’s position. “Defense you don’t have to be too smart: Just see ball, tackle ball,” he said.

Asked for a similar, simplified motto for offensive linemen, King said: “There is no simplified. There’s nothing simple. We some technicians over there.”

Stock rising Eckerson. After a brief, one-day stint at right tackle, the redshirt sophomore shifted back to the left side and has been working with the first team.

Stock falling Strong-side linebackers. With the Gamecocks moving more to a two-linebacker, three-safety scheme, snaps could be scarce for Gerrod Sinclair and Co. against certain offensive looks.

Quote of the day “We’ll let all those guys play who haven’t played much. So that means our starting quarterback (Tommy Beecher), he hasn’t played much. He’ll be out there pitching it around. May let (Stephen) Garcia pitch it around and see if he can make any decent decisions,” – Spurrier on his plan for the scrimmage.

Injury update RB Mike Davis and TE Mike Triglia missed practice due to illness. Walk-on QB Michael McQueeney is sidelined with an eye problem.

Extra points Coaches said two players who underwent offseason surgeries are expected to redshirt: sophomore DL Melvin Ingram (foot) and freshman LB Reggie Bowens (shoulder). … Spurrier is still waiting to hear whether a pair of signees – prep-school WR Tori Childers and Atlanta-area DB Tez Simmons – will qualify.

Up next The Gamecocks will hold a closed scrimmage around 8 tonight and begin installing the N.C. State gameplan Wednesday or Thursday.
