We believe you’ll find thestate.com easier to navigate, more visually compelling and more rewarding to use as we introduce our new design.
More than 13 years have passed since thestate.com launched in July 1995. Since then, the site has gone through many changes. We thank you, our readers, for suggesting changes and for our continued success.
What will you find in the new design?
Navigation – You’ll find the navigation bar moved from the left side to the top of the pages. As you move your mouse over the main topics, you’ll see additional sub-categories displayed in the bar below. Click on the main section or any of the sub-sections to go to those pages. In addition to news content, the navigation bar will take you to sections where you can place an ad or look for bargains from classified advertising or Midlands retailers.

Search bar – This appears more prominently at the top of the page above the navigation bar. Here you can search the web site, our archives or the entire web through Yahoo! Search.
Weather – In a hurry? At the top right of the home page you can get a quick look at the five-day forecast or click for more information.
Most popular, commented and recommended – Wonder what other folks are looking at and sharing the most? A list of the most popular, commented on and recommended stories appears on the right of the homepage and other pages. Click on any of these items and immediately link to them.
Multimedia – We’re making it easier for you to find videos and galleries by browsing the multimedia link, also on the right of the home page.
Events – On the right side of the pages, you’ll find our events calendar to help plan your day, week or weekend. You can add your own group’s items for consideration if you are a registered site user.
Registration – If you register (it’s free!) on the site by using the Sign In | Become a Member link at the top right of the home page, you can submit calendar events, sign up for newsletters (breaking news and other daily reports sent directly to you) and receive other value-added products such as coupons or gift certificates. You can change your subscription settings at any time.
Commenting – You can comment on our site content if you register as indicated above. Already registered on the old site? That name and password will work on the new site.
Gogamecocks – You’ll see our comprehensive USC sports coverage emphasized as before and the gogamecocks.com site will retain its design. New – register on thestate.com as a member and you can comment on gogamecocks.com stories just as you would stories on thestate.com.
The gogamecocks.com forum remains unchanged and retains its separate, existing user registration base.
You also can go directly to gogamecocks.com by typing gogamecocks.com in your browser address window or by clicking through the navigation bar at the top of the page.
Where is the news that interests you?
Home page – You’ll find a top story at the top left of the home page and the latest local news at the top middle of the page. Under the top story, look for a top entertainment story. Scroll down the page and you’ll find sports, gogamecocks.com and midlandspreps.com.
A little further down the home page, you’ll find a visual entry point to content we think you’ll like. You’ll see this feature on section fronts as well.
Business, Opinion, SC Politics, Living, National, Entertainment, World and McClatchy Washington bureau news can be accessed from headline summaries on the home page or through the navigation bar at the top.
