After beating the Vols on the field, the Gamecocks have taken a major recruit from the Vols as RB Jarvis Giles (6-0 180) of Tampa announced a committment to the Gamecocks at a news conference just after Noon on Tuesday.

"I'm not wasting anybody's time," Giles said. "I'm going to be a Gamecock. That's my decision."

Giles had been a Tennessee committment but he backed off of that following the coaching change and an official visit to USC in early November.

"When I went up there for my visit I was blown away," he said. "I will be playing for one of the best coaches in college ball, and I will be under his wings."

Tennessee did not go down without a fight.

Friday, new coach Lane Kiffin, recruiter David Reaves, running backs coach Stan Drayton and athletics director Mike Hamilton visited Giles.

"Sunday, I was confused," Giles said. "I didn't know. Monday, it was like the first school that comes to my head, I'm going to choose, and it was South Carolina. I'm just glad it's over with. I was about to explode."

Giles missed three games due to injury this season and rushed for over 900 yards and 13 touchdowns. As a junior he rushed for 1,478 yards and 20 touchdowns.

"I think I can bring a lot to the South Carolina offense," he said. "I have speed, vision, I'm elusive. I'm going to work hard and give it everything I've got."

Giles will enroll in school in January and said one of his early priorities is putting on some weight. He's also looking forward to playing with quarterback Stephen Garcia, a fellow Tampa native.

"He's a good quarterback," Giles said. "I went to high school with him my freshman year. Being in the backfield with him, there could be nothing better. Two old Florida boys."

Giles is the 24th commitment for USC's 2009 class.
