One day after helping his team win the Shrine Bowl, Greenwood DE Sam Montgomery (6-5 240) was in Columbia to watch USC's bowl practice. Montgomery attended the practice with teammates DB Byron Best and junior DL and USC commitment Kelcy Quarles, and assistant coach Dennis Thomas. Montgomery said he had a chance to talk with USC assistants Brad Lawing and Cedric Williams, and head coach Steve Spurrier. "Coach Spurrier was cracking some jokes," Montgomery said. "He told one doozy. He was just having fun."
Montgomery said he'll make an unofficial visit to Clemson at some point, probably after the bowl game. He has set his official visits in January for Michigan, North Carolina, LSU, Tennessee and Oregon. He said he continues to favor LSU with USC and Clemson "in the middle" of the pack. He said there was no favorite between the Gamecocks and Tigers.
Montgomery will play in the Under Armour All America Game early next month.
