*Poverty Index: The percentage of students eligible for Medicaid and/or free/reduced price lunch — traditional indicators of poverty. The state’s lower-performing districts tend to have higher poverty rates. The state average is 65 percent.

Understanding the 2008 results of State Report Cards for S.C. schools

Here is some information to help you understand what the terms mean.

Absolute: Describes how all students in an individual school performed on the most recent round of standardized tests.

Improvement: Compares test scores over a (rolling) two-year period; in this case, between 2006 and 2007

Excellent: The highest possible

Good: Roughly equivalent to "B"-level work

Average: Roughly equivalent to "C"-level work

Below average: Poor

At risk: The lowest rating a school can receive; previously known as "Unsatisfactory."

Tests

HSAP: High School Assessment Program, the test students must pass to earn a diploma

PACT: Palmetto Achievement Challenge Tests, a battery of exams every student in grades three through eight takes each spring. Students will take a different test this spring.
