Quarles Says USC Commitment Still In Place

DL Kelcy Quarles (6-5 270) of Greenwood was one of USC's first commitments of the 2010 class. Quarles has not decommitted from the Gamecocks but says the amount of attention he has been getting from other schools lately has made him rethink his recruitment.

"At first, the only two schools offering me were USC and Virginia," he said. "I knew I wasn't going to Virginia so that made my choice easy. Plus, one of my teammates, D.J. Swearinger, committed to Carolina making it the obvious choice. I expected Carolina and Clemson to come after me but not all of these other schools."

He says that his teammate Sam Montgomery got so much attention last year he figured he would get lost. "That happens a lot when one guy gets that kind of interest," said Quarles. "I'm not decommitting at all but, with all of this attention, I had to rethink how I was going to handle it."

He says he wants to give other schools a better look to make sure USC is the right place for him. Quarles is visiting North Carolina this weekend and plans to go to spring games at USC, Alabama, FSU, and Tennessee.

"All of these coaches are sending me personal letters," said Quarles of the current attention. "I never told anyone I was going to decommit from USC. That was just miscommunication between me and the reporter."

He also said he has tried contacting Clemson a couple of times but has not heard back from them. "They are slowly sliding off my list," he said.

Quarles says the other schools he wants to learn more about are LSU, FSU, UNC, Florida, and Bama. Each has offered him a scholarship.
