In pro sports towns, it’s not uncommon for departing athletes to take out a full-page advertisement in the local paper to thank fans for their support.
Well, Kenny McKinley had that same spirit in mind when he called today to say he’d written a letter to USC fans thanking them. McKinley, the school’s all-time leading receiver, will be honored at Saturday’s spring game.
(USC coach Steve Spurrier initially told McKinley he wanted to retire McKinley’s No. 11 jersey at the spring game before learning of USC’s policy of waiting five years before retiring jerseys.)
Anyway, the following is the text of McKinley’s letter, which also will be published in our Sunday paper. A classy gesture by a classy guy.
To The University of South Carolina and loyal Gamecock Nation:
I would like to personally thank you for your faithful support throughout my career as a Gamecock.
I will never forget while in high school during my recruitment, I attended a spring game and the Gamecock Nation made me feel as though I was already a part of the team. This was well before I made my first reception or scored my first touchdown. Because of your support I was able to exceed my expectations and achieve record-breaking numbers!
As I prepare for playing at the next level I will forever be grateful and appreciative of your continued support. I will always be a USC Gamecock.
