Jury selection was under way this morning in the trial of a former Richland County day care provider charged in the 2007 death of an infant.
Willie Ritter, 65, who formerly operated the W.E. Ritter Center for Early Childhood Development, is accused of causing the death of 10-month-old Javon Simpson on May 18, 2007.
The child was left unattended for seven hours in a day care van parked at the center on Columbia College Drive. The infant died of hyperthermia, or heat stroke, authorities said.
Ritter is charged with homicide by child abuse, which carries a sentence of 20 years to life upon conviction.
The trial before Circuit Judge Paul Burch is expected to last several days.
