Steve Spurrier is still searching for playmakers.
The South Carolina coach said Tuesday he hopes to give tailback Kenny Miles a look this week against Florida Atlantic. Miles, a redshirt freshman from Lawrenceville, Ga., has not had a carry in the Gamecocks’ first two games.
The Gamecocks rank 11th in the SEC in rushing and are 90th nationally with an average of 111 yards a game. They are averaging 3.1 yards a carry.
Diminutive tailback Bryce Sherman, a former track sprinter who had his first two carries at Georgia, has been taking snaps in the slot.
USC also is making a change up front, where Heath Batchelor will replace Terrence Campbell at left guard. Batchelor was a starter last season before withdrawing from school to deal with personal issues.
The Gamecocks also are addressing their problems on kickoff coverage. Starting defensive end and team captain Cliff Matthews will play on the coverage team vs. FAU after the Gamecocks gave up 252 return yards at Georgia, which had a 100-yarder for a touchdown and set a school record with its total.
