USC-FAU: Thumbs up, thumbs down

USC receiver Tori Gurley (four catches for 100 yards) continued to be a top target for Stephen Garcia, and while he didn't have a touchdown catch, at least this game he didn't have one called back.

The inexperienced linebackers and Spurs played well with star Eric Norwood getting limited time. Josh Dickerson and Antonio Allen had seven tackles, while Tony Straughter had five tackles and one for a loss.

Melvin Ingram has struggled with his conditioning, but the defensive tackle had a key sack in the third quarter. After FAU drove past midfield, Ingram's 12-yard sack pushed the Owls back, and two plays later a fumble gave USC the ball and led to another score.

USC gave a lot of players a chance to see action, and walk-on Scottie Spurrier got his first career catch. Although it probably would have been nice for quarterback Reid McCollum to get more than just one late pass attempt.

To referee Tom Ritter for referring to "Florida International" when announcing a timeout.
