Road gets steep for LSU

Let's be honest: Louisiana State impressed no one in September. And, yet, the Tigers find themselves ranked fourth in the country.

"I think we've got a lot to prove, to be honest with you," LSU coach Les Miles said Wednesday.

This week, LSU visits No. 18 Georgia. Next week, LSU hosts No. 1 Florida.

How good are the Tigers? We're about to find out.

There were positive moments in Saturday's victory against Mississippi State. Jordan Jefferson looked to be in better command of the offense. The defense held when it had to. The Tigers got a punt return for a score from do-it-all safety Chad Jones.

But the Tigers are still making entirely too many mistakes - in every facet. They can't get away with them anymore.

Thumbs up

A.J. Green

Georgia's MVP might have had the best month of any player in the country. Green made his usual handful of acrobatic catches against Arizona State. But there was a first: The Summerville native blocked what would have been a late, go-ahead field goal.

Leaving Tim Tebow in

Look, you tell Tebow to come out of a game. See how he reacts. People who are all over Urban Meyer need to take a step back.

Greg McElroy

Talk this summer was that McElroy had the smarts for a seamless QB transition in Tuscaloosa. Now we know why.

Thumbs down

Gamecocks running rotation

After going for 113 yards the week before, Jarvis Giles gets two carries against Ole Miss. Kenny Miles is MIA for weeks and then suddenly the lead back. Stability, anyone?

Jon Crompton

Crompton seems like a nice enough guy. But he is not an SEC QB. Vols are trying to figure out how they will get to six wins. Hint: They won't.

Mississippi State from the half-yard line

Bulldogs have got to punch that one in against LSU. The team did what it had to do to get a foot from the win, but no closer. Third- and fourth-down play calls were suspect.

By the numbers

3 - SEC teams in the top four. Now, how long will LSU (No. 4) stay there?

41 - South Carolina's red-zone TD percentage. Been inside the 20 an SEC-high 22 times and scored nine TDs.

261 - Number of games since Florida was last shut out (in 1988). That predates even Steve Spurrier.

Quote of the week

"The whole team is kind of rallying around Tim."
