January 2002: The S.C. Air National Guard's 169th Fighter Wing deploys six F-16 fighter jets and 200 people to the region for 90 days. Guardsmen bomb key Taliban strongholds and support U.S. troops on the ground.
May 2007: The S.C. Army National Guard's 218th Brigade Combat Team deploys 1,800 soldiers for a year to train and mentor the Afghan police and army. The S.C. soldiers also provide security and humanitarian aid for Afghans.
Since 2002: Dozens of other S.C. Guardsmen deploy to Afghanistan to train the Afghan Army.
YET TO GO
En route: About 65 Guardsmen assigned to an Army Agriculture Development Team have been mobilized and are training at Camp Atterbury, Ind. The unit expects to leave for Afghanistan in late November.
January 2010: The 1st Battalion, 178th Field Artillery, based in Georgetown, has been alerted to deploy about 475 troops in January to Afghanistan.
Early 2010: The 1221st Engineer Company, based in Rock Hill, has been alerted to deploy 200 soldiers.
