WOMEN

2005: 859 new permits were issued to women.

2008: 3,386 new permits were issued, an increase of 294%.

Through April of this year, 2,142 new permits were issued to women. If that pace continues through the end of this year, a total of 6,426 new permits will have been issued, nearly double 2008's total.

MEN

2005: 3,160 new permits were issued to men.

2008: 11,244 new permits were issued, an increase of 256%.

Through April of this year, 6,201 new permits were issued to men. At that pace, 18,603 new permits will have been issued, a 65 percent increase over 2008.

BLACK RESIDENTS

2005: 418 new permits were issued to black residents.

2008: 1,511 new permits were issued, an increase of 261%.

Through April of this year, 524 new permits had been issued to black residents. At that pace, 1,572 permits will have been issued by the end of the year, up slightly from 2008.

WHITE RESIDENTS

2005: 3,563 new permits were issued to white residents.

2008: 13,020 new permits were issued, an increase of 265%.

Through April, 7,755 new permits had been issued; at that rate, 23,265 new permits will have been issued by the end of the year, nearly double 2008's total.

BY AGE

New permit issues jumped in all age groups, with the biggest percentage increases and largest numbers in the 40-60 age group. You have to be at least 21 to apply; the oldest permit holder is 93. Below are the percentages of permit holders by age groups from 2005 through April of this year:
