USC-Tennessee: Thumbs up, thumbs down

THUMBS UP

Kicker Spencer Lanning

He was 2-for-2 on field goals, including a career-long 47-yarder, making the junior 14-for-16 this season. After missing his first try of the season, a 27-yarder, the only one he has missed was a 50-yard attempt.

USC cornerback Stephon Gilmore

He had two great plays, though his team couldn't capitalize on one and the other was negated. His sack, off a cornerback blitz, resulted ina fumble, but the ball squirted away from teammate Shaq Wilson. Gilmore later had a 77-yard punt return called back because of an illegal block by fellow freshman D.J. Swearinger.

THUMBS DOWN

Tennessee's uniform choice

The Volunteers had a dramatic change of jerseys, after wearing orange jerseys in warm-ups. The result was an ugly combination of orange pants, black jerseys and white helmets. It fit the Halloween theme, but Mr. Blackwell surely was spinning in his grave.

USC's porous kickoff coverage

Adam Yates' first kickoff, a high pop-up, was bobbled by Tennessee, leading to a start at the 20. But the next two were too short, allowing Tennessee to start at its own 44 and 43, and derailing the momentum created by USC scores.

The Gamecocks run defense

It continues to be a problem without much hope of being fixed. Tennessee tailback Montario Hardesty ran for 123 yards, his only better performances this year coming against Western Kentucky and Ohio. Tennessee averaged five yards per carry, after entering the game averaging 4.5.
