South Carolina is set to play Navy for the first time in nearly a quarter-century.
The Midshipmen were added to the 2011 schedule, USC announced on Wednesday. Navy will visit Williams-Brice Stadium on Sept. 17, 2011.
The addition rounds out USC's nonconference schedule for 2011. The Gamecocks are set to start a long series with East Carolina by playing in Charlotte on Sept. 3, 2011. The Citadel is also on the schedule, though originally that game was supposed to be Sept. 17, and is being moved to a different date for the Navy matchup. USC will finish the regular season by hosting Clemson.
The Gamecocks won the last meeting with Navy, in 1988, but the most fateful one went the other way. USC was unbeaten in 1984, harboring national title hopes, when it was upset 38-21 by the Midshipmen.
Navy has been a strong program lately, going 10-4 last season and defeating Missouri in the Texas Bowl.
