U.S. Rep. John Spratt, Rock Hill Democrat, and his Republican opponent, Indian Land state Sen. Mick Mulvaney, debated Friday in Columbia, disagreeing on the effectiveness of the federal stimulus package, financial regulation, federal health care reform and the direction of the country.
Spratt described Mulvaney as a tea party extremist. Mulvaney said Spratt has betrayed his largely conservative district and should not be returned to Washington.
Spratt and Mulvaney are locked in a congressional race that is receiving national attention, as Spratt has been targeted by national Republicans. More than $1 million in third party advertising has poured into this race, with all of it directed at defeating Spratt.
