The YMCA of Columbia and the City of Camden have announced they will become partners to open a new recreation facility in downtown Camden.
“This will be a great addition to Camden and Kershaw County,” said Mayor Jeffrey Graham.
City and YMCA officials have been quietly working for several months to put the project together, but there are still numerous unknowns, including the precise size, scope and opening date of the new facility.
A series of three public meetings will take place in June to get citizen comments on what they think should be in the new YMCA.
“We are hoping to have a pool, but affordability is a key thing,” Graham said.
One thing for sure: the new facility will have the name YMCA in its name, he said.
The city and the YMCA will be exploring with other entities in the Camden area, possibly including the Kershaw County Council and the local hospital, as to whether they would like to become partners too.
