The South Gamecocks defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 21-10 in Columbia, just one day after Hurricane Hugo had devastated most of the state.
Still, 70,018 loyal fans were on hand, and saw Carolina do all their scoring in the first half, capped by a Todd Ellis to Robert Brooks TD pass with only 26 seconds remaining. This gave USC a 21-7 lead at halftime, which would be plenty.
Senior Harold Green stormed the Tech D for 139 yards on 29 carries, despite the very wet turf.
