Lou Holtz, in his last year as coach, leads the Gamecocks into Bryant-Denny Stadium, where they defeat the Alabama Crimson Tide by a score of 20-3.
Leading only 6-3 at halftime, Gamecock QB Syvelle Newton broke it open in the third quarter with a pair of TD runs of eight and nine yards respectively. The USC defense stymied the Tide offense the rest of the way.
In what would best be described as a defensive struggle, the two teams combined for only 113 yards passing.
