USC gets one of its most memorable victories ever with a 36-32 heart stopping win over Notre Dame in South Bend.
It was a seesaw battle in the first half, with the Irish holding a 17-14 lead after John Carney booted a 48-yard FG on the last play of the half.
It looked bleak for Carolina as Notre Dame’s Steve Beurlein hit Allen Pinkett with a six yard TD midway through the third quarter. USC trailed 26-14 headed to the fourth quarter.
Mike Hold led the Gamecocks back however with two TD runs in the fourth, one being 33 yards. USC would expand the lead to 36-26 before a Pinkett TD made it interesting late.
