The magic of the 1984 season continued in Raleigh as the fifth-ranked Gamecocks defeated N.C. State by a score of 35-28. It was far from easy.
Trailing 15-3 at halftime, Carolina got a 12-yard TD run from Raynard Brown to cut the deficit to 15-10. After an exchange of FGs and TD passes, Carolina found itself trailing 25-21.
RB Thomas Dendy then raced in from 14 yards to give USC the lead 28-25.
After an N.C. State FG tied the game with 3:26 left, Carolina moved into NCSU territory, where Dendy scored again, this time from six yards out with only 0:50 to play to put Carolina ahead for good and improve their record to 8-0.
