The Gamecocks finally got a little breathing room midway through the second half after Bobby Cremins steal and layup put USC up by eight at 45-37. This margin forced Virginia out of the stall game, and ended the hopes of the outmanned Cavs.
Center Tom Owens was dominate with 23 points and 11 rebounds in the game. Owens is still second all-time at USC with 1,116 career rebounds.
