The Gamecocks won an exciting shootout in The Liberty Bowl over Conference USA champion Houston by a score of 44-36, in Memphis.

There was very little in the way of defense in the first half, as Carolina found itself trailing 28-27 at halftime. The 55 points scored were a Liberty Bowl record for a half.

Houston QB Kevin Kolb was virtually unstoppable in the first half, tossing three TD passes, including a 77-yarder with only 0:11 left in the half. However, the USC defensive staff made some nice adjustments, and held the Cougars to only nine points in the second half.

Gamecock QB Blake Mitchell tossed two TD passes to Kenny McKinley in the fourth quarter to put it out of reach. Mitchell had a great day, passing for 323 yards, and a bowl record 4 TDs. Blake was named the game’s MVP.
