USC had built an 11-point lead by halftime, and saw it swell to 18 with nine minutes left. The Crimson Tide was able to cut the lead down to nine, but back-to-back great assist passes by Carey Rich thwarted the comeback. Ultimately, the 1-for-19 three-point shooting by Alabama was the difference.
