The 25th-ranked Gamecocks held on to win over the LSU Tigers in a wild finish by a score of 61-55. A record crowd of 17,927 was on hand at the Colonial Center and watched as four technical fouls were called in the last two minutes.
The first tech was called on LSU coach John Brady after a charging violation was whistled against his team with 2:11 left. LSU led 50-47 at the time, but Josh Gonner sank the free throws cutting the lead to one.
The momentum swung big to USC’s side at that point, and they built a 58-53 lead with only 21 seconds left. Then, Rolando Howell of Carolina and LSU’s Jaime Lloreda got tangled after a free throw and began shoving. This resulted in a double technical, one on each team. Seconds later, USC’s Mike Boynton received a technical foul after arguing with LSU assistant coach Butch Pierre.
Carolina held on for its fourth straight victory despite the late game excitement, and hitting only 4% (1-23) of its three-point shots.
