The Gamecocks pitching was brilliant in an 8-0, two-hit shutout of The Citadel, in Charleston.
Starter Jason Haynie allowed only the two hits in his five innings of work to pick up the win. J.J. Pearsall and Wally Maynard were outstanding in relief. Neither pitcher allowed a hit, going two innings each. Future major leaguer Britt Reames took the loss for The Citadel. The big inning for USC was the fifth, when they scored six runs to blow it open.
Stacy Stokes led USC with three hits, while All-American Mac White collected two. White is the all-time hits leader at Carolina with 303 during his great career (1991-1994).
