Carolina ended spring practice with a scrimmage in front of 5,500 fans at Williams-Brice. Coach Joe Morrison decided not to have a formal spring game because of a lack of running backs and wide receivers due to injuries.
USC was working on a new multiple-set, pro offense installed by new offensive coordinator Al Groh. Starting quarterback Todd Ellis and back-up Dickie DeMasi each directed scoring drives on their first two possessions, two FGs and two TDs.
Ellis completed 11 of 23 passes for 140 yards. DeMasi completed 3 of 5 passes for 17 yards, and ran twice for 18 more.
The big surprise of the scrimmage was RB Greg Welch, who was returning from a serious knee injury. Welch ran 15 times for 132 yards and two TDs, including an impressive 68-yard touchdown scamper.
