Carolina ended the Clemson Tigers 20-game winning streak, thanks largely to Mark Taylor’s 7th inning grand slam off of Tiger pitcher Randy Mazey, which broke open a tight game. The blast gave USC a 9-2 lead, and the Gamecocks held on to beat tenth-ranked Clemson 11-7. USC won despite losing Coach June Raines to an ejection in the third inning, after a disputed call at home plate.
Starting pitcher Joe Cardwell picked up the win for USC. Cardwell tossed 7 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on four hits. He also struck out six Tiger batters. Garrett Carter also had a nice game for Carolina. Carter went 2 for 5, had a big home run, and knocked in two. Garrett had a big ’88 season for Carolina. He hit .335, with 18 HRs and 60 RBIs. He also swiped 17 bases for good measure.
