The much-anticipated showdown between South Carolina and North Carolina in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament went the Tarheels way, 92-69, in Morgantown, WV.
In this rematch of the classic 1971 ACC Tournament finals, UNC built a big 51-32 lead at halftime and never looked back. The two teams combined to shoot 70 free throws, showing the physicality of the contest. The Tarheels stifling defense held the Gamecocks in check, allowing USC to shoot only 33% from the floor. Only two players were able to reach double-figure scoring. Kevin Joyce led the way with 21, while Tom Riker added 10 with 10 rebounds as well.
Carolina added one more win to the season total with a consolation victory over Villanova two days later to finish with a very strong 24-5 record.
