The Gamecocks completed a two-game sweep of the hated Clemson Tigers baseball squad with a 12-7 victory in Columbia.
The key moment in the contest occurred when freshman pitcher Jeb Babel came out of the USC bullpen in the seventh inning with the bases full of Tigers and the game tied at 7. Babel held the Tigers at bay, and his teammates answered with a four spot in the eighth inning, handing Babel the win after he was able to pitch the rest of the way.
The big hit in the eighth inning for Carolina was a two-run single by Randy Vollmer. The win improved USC’s record to an impressive 26-4 for Coach June Raines. The 1981 Gamecocks advanced all the way to Omaha and the College World Series, where they went 2-2.
