It had been 232 games since Clemson had been shut out on the baseball diamond. Carolina put an end to that streak with a 5-0 win at Sarge Frye Field in front of 4,800 fans.
Gamecock pitcher Rodney Richey did his part to end the impressive run. He tossed a four-hitter, going the distance with no walks.
Carolina put this one away as far as the win goes in the fifth inning with three runs to make it 5-0. However, the drama with the shutout streak continued until the final out was registered.
USC shortstop Jeff Barns was the hitting star in this contest. Barns collected three hits and drove in two runs.
Another interesting tidbit of this game was that USC denied Tigers coach Bill Wilhelm what would’ve been his 800th career win. There was no celebration for the Tigers on this day.
