Carolina won the NCAA Atlantic Regional championship and a berth in the College World Series after a 6-1 victory over Wake Forest at The Roost in front of 6,300. The Gamecocks had to fight through the losers’ bracket after dropping the opening game to South Alabama. USC won four straight games, culminated by the victory over Wake to advance.
Starter Randy Martz improved to 12-0 on the season with the victory in the regional championship. He threw a complete game, scattered ten hits and struck out twelve Demon Deacon hitters.
Carolina pounded out four homers in the contest. Don Repsler led off the second inning with his 11th homer to put USC up early. Johnny Hinkel also homered, while Mark Van Bever and Mookie Wilson went back-to-back in the seventh inning.
