The 21st-ranked Gamecocks captured the Atlanta Regional championship with relative ease. No. 2 seed USC defeated Stetson 9-3 in the final game, avoiding home-standing Georgia Tech who was eliminated surprisingly after two games.
The Carolina pitching staff surrendered only five runs in 27 regional innings, for a 1.67 ERA. The winning pitcher for USC in the regional final game was Steven Bondurant, who went seven innings, allowed 3 runs on 8 hits, and K’d 8 Hatter hitters. Aaron Rawl pitched a perfect two innings to finish it out for Carolina.
Justin Harris and freshman Steven Tolleson each collected three hits for the Gamecocks. Tolleson added a solo homer as well, as part of USC’s big 14–hit attack.
Carolina advanced on to the super-regionals where they would host the North Carolina Tarheels, with a trip to Omaha at stake.
