USC Athletics Director Eric Hyman announced that a school record number of season tickets had been sold for the upcoming season.
The 62,616 season tickets sold eclipsed the previous high of 62,103 set in 2002, following back-to-back New Year’s Day bowl victories. The enthusiasm was understandable, considering that legendary winning coach Steve Spurrier would be leading the Gamecocks onto the field during the 2005 season.
Spurrier took over for Lou Holtz following the 2004 season, and brought with him a mighty impressive coaching resume. Spurrier posted an amazing 142-40-2 record in his college coaching career during stops at Duke, then his alma mater Florida. Championships were commonplace, as Steve won the National Championship in 1996 at Florida to go along with seven SEC titles. Maybe most impressively, he won the ACC Championship at Duke in 1989.
Had Carolina finally hired the man to lead them to an SEC championship? The huge number of tickets sold indicated that many fans believed that they had. The Steve Spurrier era at USC would begin shortly in front of a Thursday night national TV audience vs. Central Florida.
