Doc's appeals to the Southerner in all of us

WHAT'S GOOD HERE: Get to know the people behind local restaurants.

Jesse Bullard is the manager of Doc's Barbecue and Southern Buffet on Shop Road.

What's good here?

"Obviously barbecue, and fried chicken and catfish are our other specialties."

Tell me about the catfish.

"They're fried nuggets that are battered with a lemon pepper seasoning. We have homemade tartar sauce and cocktail sauce."

And the barbecue?

"The special thing about that, we have two types. We have a pepper vinegar-based sauce as well as a mustard sweet-blend barbecue."

What's on the buffet?

"There are two types of barbecue, fried chicken, fried catfish, pork skins.

"Some of the sides are macaroni and cheese, collards, green beans, baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, a vegetable of the day.

"Another big seller on the buffet is the chocolate cobbler."

When is it most crowded?

"Lunch time, right at 12:30 is our peak hour."

Who eats there?

"In the past it's been a lunch-time crowd. Now we're getting into the college market; there's so much college housing around here. And also good ol' Southern people who love barbecue. Gamecock fans and sports enthusiasts are certainly regulars."

And you recently started opening at night?

"We're open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights until 10.

"We also just bought flat-screen TVs . . . We hope to get some people in here watching away games, watching Saturday college football. We're also expanding our deck on the left side of restaurant."

What's the biggest misconception about Doc's?

"Because we call ourselves barbecue and Southern buffet, people think it's just a buffet, but we do have an expansive menu. And we have healthy alternatives - wraps and salads."

Healthy barbecue?

"We offer turkey barbecue as a healthy alternative. We smoke it all night just like we do with our hams and shoulders."
