'40s manicure trend is back

Is it any surprise that, in a season so rich with satin, shoulder pads and platform heels, nails are getting their own touch of 1940s glam? The crescent moon manicure, spotted on runways from Ruffian to Thakoon, in essence turns the French manicure upside down, flipping the focus from tips to half-moons.

The secret to perfect lines: Coat the entire nail with the color you choose for half-moons. Allow to dry completely, then mask with a French-mani stencil sticker and apply two coats of polish from stencil to tips. Finish with a high-shine top coat.

As for color, lavender-tinged shades of gray and putty are the newest neutrals. For serious glam, go deep, dark purple.

Two to try: Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen in White for the half moons and Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Night Flight.
