Health calendar of events


The City of Columbia will offer free health screenings to city employees Feb. 22-24 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Public Works Conference Room, 2910 Colonial Drive.

In January, 430 employees took advantage of the voluntary screening with 16 percent requiring follow-up care.


The late-winter charity race season is upon us. Here are a few events coming up:

Saturday: Make My Day 12K trail run, Harbison State Forest, proceeds go to state forest programs, $30, (803) 929-0771.

Saturday: Race Judicata, 5K run/walk, proceeds go to The Women's Shelter and Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands, 10 a.m., Hand Middle School, corner of Woodrow and Duncan streets, Columbia, $20,

March 6: March for Meals at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, 5K walk/run, proceeds benefit Meals on Wheels, 7:30 a.m., 500 Wildlife Parkway, Columbia, $20 runners, $15 walkers, $10 ages 12 and younger,

March 13: Get to the Green, 5K run/1-mile walk, 8:30 a.m., corner of Blossom and Santee streets, Columbia, $30,


February is National Heart Month, and local hospitals are offering a number of heart-healthy activities.

Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and in South Carolina. National trends indicate one in five Americans suffer some form of cardiovascular disease; in our state, that number is one in four.

Here are some of the events scheduled:

Today: Child and infant CPR instruction, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Providence Hospital Northeast, 120 Gateway Corporate Blvd., $20 fee. Register: (877) 256-5381

Wednesday: CPR training session noon-2 p.m. at 14 Medical Park, Suite 300. Register: (803) 296-2273

Thursday Cardiac rehabilitation dietitian Lisa Akly will demonstrate healthy cooking ideas at 11 a.m. in the Palmetto Health Heart Hospital Atrium Conference Room. You also can join Akly for a heart-healthy grocery tour at 11 a.m. Friday at the Food Lion at 1001 Harden St.

Feb. 24: Dr. Wade Collins will host a luncheon session on abnormal heartbeat issues in the Palmetto Health Heart Hospital Atrium classroom noon-1:30 p.m.
