Winners of The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge and Kids’ “State Dinner” have been announced. This national contest is part of first lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative and was sponsored by Epicurious, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Agriculture with winners from each state, three territories and the District of Columbia being recognized at a Kids’ State Dinner at the White House on July 9. South Carolina’s representative will be Corbin Jackson, 9, of Mount Pleasant. His winning recipe, “Bring It On, Brussels Sprout Wrap,” and others can be found online at In addition to joining the first lady at lunch, Jackson will tour the White House kitchen garden.

This is the second year of the contest in which a parent or guardian is asked to work with children ages 8-12 to create a lunchtime recipe that is healthy, affordable, original and delicious. In support of Let’s Move, the first lady’s initiative to help solve the problem of childhood obesity, each recipe had to adhere to the guidelines set forth by the USDA’s MyPlate criteria for healthy meals: using all food groups, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and low-fat dairy foods, with fruits and veggies making up roughly half of the plate or recipe.

The Food Park opens Thursday

The highly anticipated North Columbia Community Farmer’s Market will host a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday. The market, located at the corner of North Main and Newman streets, will feature free popcorn, samples of healthy foods, cooking demonstrations and fun for everyone. The market’s regular hours will be Thursdays, opening at 5 p.m.

Lunch and learn herb swap today at Lourie Center

Free grocery store tour. The South Carolina Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, a professional organization of registered dietitians, in conjunction with Food Lion is offering a free grocery store tour as a service to the community. Inaugural Savannah Food & Wine Festival is Nov. 11-17. This first-time event will feature wine dinners at area restaurants, wine strolls and more throughout the week.
