Why we chose it: Two Men and a Truck has locations in three Kansas metro areas — Overland Park, Wichita and Topeka — and can handle local and long-distance moves. The company has generally positive customer ratings and relatively few complaints.

Pros
  • Offers local and long-distance moving at the Kansas locations
  • Handles unique and large-item moving
  • Offers full or partial packing services
  • Offers discounts to people who pack ahead of time
  • Has load-only options available
Cons
  • Kansas locations don't offer storage solutions and junk removal
  • Instant quotes aren't available online

Two Men and a Truck is a national moving company with locally-owned locations across Kansas. All three Kansas locations do local moves as well as long-distance moving within the state or across state lines. However, they don’t offer storage and junk removal services, even though those are offered at locations in other states.

Assuming you want the company to take care of most of the work on moving day, you can take advantage of its packing options: either full or partial packing. The full packing choice triggers an all-inclusive service that includes the labor of packing all of your belongings, as well as providing packing supplies and rearranging furniture at your new house.

A second alternative is the partial-packing option, in which you have Two Men and a Truck pack only part of your home. For example, you could have the movers pack your kitchen (to help with safely packing dishes), while you take care of the rest of the house.

There’s also a true budget option if you need only the two (or more) men but not the truck. You provide the vehicle and the company only packs your possessions and moves them into it. You can often also opt to have them unpack you at the other end.

Two Men and a Truck moves large and unique items that may need special handling (a safe or pool table, for example). The company says it moves pianos, but not grand pianos.

Unfortunately, you can’t get an instant quote online. You can fill out a form with information about your move and a representative will contact you. For the cost, local moves are charged by the hour while moves that are long distances are charged based on how far the move is and how much your items weigh.

Two Men and a Truck reviews

The Better Business Bureau doesn’t accredit Two Men and a Truck, but the company has an A+ rating with the Kansas BBB. All Kansas locations of the company are registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) — the federal agency that oversees commercial vehicle safety. The Topeka and Wichita locations don’t have any complaints that have been filed with the FMCSA in the last four years. The Kansas City location has a single complaint.

Why we chose it: If you’re looking for one of the best Kansas City moving companies, A Friend With A Truck Movers offers local moving services in the greater Kansas City metro area, and in nearby places in both Kansas and Missouri. It’s locally and family-owned, with a good reputation in the area.

Pros
  • Locally owned and operated
  • Expertise in city moving
  • Offers packing services
  • Has large-item shipping services
  • Also offers long-distance moves to or from Kansas City
Cons
  • Only serves the Kansas City metro and surrounding areas
  • Doesn't offer car shipping
  • Doesn't offer storage
  • Can't get a quote online

A Friend With A Truck is one of the most popular Kansas City movers. It has local expertise with moving experience in the city, including apartments and condos. A Friend With A Truck can service residential and commercial moves in the area.

The company mainly stays local, offering service in the Kansas City metro and the cities and towns just outside. However, it does offer some out-of-state moving services, which are available in any state in the U.S., according to the company’s website.

A Friend With A Truck Movers offers packing and unpacking services — including packing supplies. However, it doesn’t offer car shipping and doesn’t have storage facilities to store your items. There is no information about extra protection plans on its website.

The company also offers large-item shipping for homeowners and businesses. This can be helpful to those who need to ship an item that is too large for regular shipping services like USPS, UPS or FedEx.

You can’t get a A Friend With A Truck moving quote online, but you can call the company for an estimate or fill out a form on its website, after which a company representative will contact you.

A Friend With A Truck reviews

A Friend With A Truck is a small company, so it doesn’t have as many customer reviews as some of the larger companies available in Kansas. However, the reviews it does have are mainly positive. The Better Business Bureau doesn’t accredit the company, but it has an A+ rating. It has only received two complaints registered with the BBB over the last three years, and it only has one review – a five-star rating. A Friend With A Truck is registered with the FMCSA and hasn’t garnered any complaints with the agency in at least the last four years.

Why we chose it: Atlas Van Lines provides long-distance, cross-country moving services to any state. It can also move you to Canada or overseas through its network of global partners. Atlas Van Lines has a large fleet and  a good reputation. In addition to being a top pick in Kansas, it’s also one of the best interstate moving companies in the U.S.

Pros
  • Large fleet
  • Offers full-service moving to any state and Canada
  • Can facilitate international moves
  • Has a mobile app
  • Offers extra protection
  • Offers car shipping
  • Has storage facilities available
  • No deposit required
  • Binding quotes are available
Cons
  • Customer service can vary by location
  • Instant online quotes are not provided

As a full-service mover, Atlas Van Lines offers packing, transporting, unpacking, storage and car shipping. Regarding storage, Atlas can store your items during or after your move at one of its facilities.

Atlas offers a mobile app called the Atlas Customer Portal. Through the app, customers have access to features that allow them to manage aspects of their move, like tracking their truck, making payments, filing a claim and viewing documents.

All Atlas Van Lines moves include the minimum insurance requirements of 60 cents per pound, but the company offers extra protection if you wish to purchase that.

You can request an Atlas quote online or over the phone, but the company doesn’t offer instant estimates online. There are a few different types of estimates you can get that have differing levels of firmness in regard to cost:

  • Binding estimates: A binding estimate is guaranteed not to increase, even after your items are weighed and loaded into the truck. (It also won’t decrease, though.)
  • Non-binding estimates: A non-binding estimate is subject to change. If your items are weighed when loaded into the truck and weigh more than was expected as per the estimate, you could be charged more than what you were quoted.
  • Binding-not-to-exceed estimate: A binding-not-to-exceed estimate is a mixture of the previous two options. Like a binding estimate, you are given an initial quote and you won’t pay more than that. However, if your move ends up costing less than your estimate, you pay the lower price.

Atlas doesn’t require you to put a deposit down on your move.

Atlas Van Lines reviews

Since Atlas is a large moving company, customer service can vary by location. Still, the company holds an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, though the organization doesn’t accredit it. There were 15 total complaints filed last year with the FMCSA, but that is a lower number than other competitors of its size.

Why we chose it: PODS is a portable storage unit moving company that we chose for this list because of its accessibility in Kansas and its moving and storage options. There are storage facilities in Kansas City, Overland Park and Wichita.

Pros
  • Handles local and long-distance moving
  • Has storage facilities
  • Allows you to pack and unpack at your own pace
  • Has a generous cancellation policy
  • Instant quotes and booking are available online
Cons
  • Doesn't offer in-house, full-service moving
  • Space will be needed on your property to store the moving unit
  • All damage and loss protection comes at added cost
  • The total cost is due one day before delivery

Moving is expensive. If you’re looking for a cheaper Kansas move and you’re willing to do a lot of the work yourself, PODS is a DIY moving option in Kansas. The company delivers a portable storage unit to your home and, once you’ve filled it, transports it to your new home. You not only have to pack your belongings but unload them from the unit at the destination. If you aren’t yet ready to receive the unit at your new home, PODS can keep it at one of its storage locations until you are.

Aside from its affordability, another benefit of PODS is convenience. You can pack and unpack your belongings at your own pace and rent the storage container monthly.

There are three different container sizes to choose from — small (8-foot), medium (12-foot) and large (16-foot). The cost of PODS service depends on the size of container you need, how long you keep it and the insurance you choose. Two packages offer extra protection plans at an added cost: The Container Only Option (COO) covers damage to the storage unit, and the Contents Protection Option (CPO) covers the unit and personal belongings.

You can get a quote and book your move online. Booking ahead of time is the best way to make sure you get the delivery date you want. PODS doesn’t require a deposit when you book your move, but you have to pay the total bill no later than 24 hours before your delivery. If your plans change and you need to cancel, you won’t be charged a cancellation fee if you contact PODS by 4 p.m. local time the day before your delivery.

Before booking a Kansas move with PODS, keep in mind that you must have an area on your property to store your unit for packing — and one at your new home when it’s time to unpack. A driveway is ideal, since you may require a permit from your city or town to park it on the street or from a condo association or building owner to park it in the development’s lot — especially for an overnight stay.

PODS reviews

PODS isn’t accredited or rated by the Better Business Bureau. Of the complaints filed on the BBB, most involved errors with communication, scheduling, delivery and charges. There haven’t been any complaints filed in the last four years with the FMCSA, the federal agency that oversees commercial vehicle safety. PODS has a solid, though not stellar, 3.6/5 star rating on the review platform TrustPilot.com.

Why we chose it: College Hunks is a moving and junk removal company with locations in Kansas City, Topeka and Wichita. It’s one of our Kansas moving company choices because of its flexible moving and junk removal options that fit a variety of needs. It also has a good reputation and is one of the best junk removal companies in the U.S.

Pros
  • Services local and long-distance moves
  • Specializes in junk removal
  • Environmentally responsible
  • Partners with charities to donate items
  • Offers hourly labor options
Cons
  • Does not offer quotes online
  • Some estimates require an in-home visit
  • Doesn't haul cars
  • Doesn't list insurance options on its website

If you’re downsizing in Kansas, you may find that you have a lot of things that you need to get rid of. It can be time-consuming to take trips to a donation center or trash facility yourself. Rather than getting a dumpster or hauling the items yourself, College Hunks is an option in Kansas that will both haul away junk you no longer need – and move the possessions you do need to your new home.

College Hunks claims to be an eco-friendly option for junk removal. The company says that more than 70% of what they haul away is recycled or donated. It partners with charities – including Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity ReStore and PickUpMyDonations.com –  to facilitate donations to people in need.

In addition to hauling junk away, College Hunks offers local and long-distance residential or office moving services. It also offers the following labor-only services for DIY moves, both within your home and to other locations:

  • Packing/unpacking
  • Loading/unloading a truck or storage unit
  • Moving furniture or items in your home or office

The cost of your move depends on the travel fee and hourly rate, according to the company’s website. You can request an estimate for the junk removal, moving and labor services online and a representative will call you. For moving, if you live in a house or apartment that is larger than 1,500 square feet or two bedrooms, College Hunks recommends an on-site consultation.

College Hunks doesn’t do car shipping or disposal. It also doesn’t provide any information about insurance or protection plans on its website.

College Hunks reviews

College Hunks is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau and doesn’t seem to respond to any complaints or reviews received with the organization. The company is registered with the FMCSA and has not received any complaints in Kansas in the last four years. College Hunks has a solid 3.5/5 star rating on the Angi website HomeAdvisor.com, although that is only based on a mere two reviews.

Other companies we considered

We analyzed a variety of moving companies in Kansas to determine which ones had the best options. We considered the following companies but did not include them based on some restrictions in their offerings along with their availability in Kansas.

  • U-Pack: U-Pack is like PODS in the sense that it is a self-service mover. It has locations in Kansas but requires a minimum of 100 miles for your move, making it suitable only for long-distance self-service moves.
  • Moving Proz: Moving Proz is a good option for local movers in Kansas City. While it has a really good BBB rating (A), that judgment is slightly lower than our other Kansas City mover pick.
  • American Van Lines: American Van Lines is a local and long-distance mover that can handle last-minute moves without any extra fees, however, it has lower ratings than other Kansas moving companies.

chevron-down
chevron-up

Moving costs in Kansas largely depend on the type of move you are doing. If you are moving locally, the cost could be a few hundred dollars. However, if you are moving across state lines, it could be a few thousand dollars.

What factors affect the cost of a Kansas move?

chevron-down
chevron-up

The cost of moving in Kansas is dependent on a number of things. All moving companies charge for services differently, so make sure to check with your company. Typically, companies charge based on the following factors:

  • The weight of your belongings
  • The distance for the move
  • The range of services and extras you request
  • Amount of time the move requires from start to finish

Your cost also depends on the services you choose. Full-service moving costs more than if you handle the packing yourself. It may also be more if you have big items (like a piano), need your car shipped or need to use your moving company's storage facility.

How do I know if a moving company is licensed in Kansas?

chevron-down
chevron-up

Moving companies are required to be licensed by the Kansas Corporation Commission. You can check with that entity to make sure the company is licensed. In addition to that, moving companies must register with the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). To check USDOT and FMCSA registration, you can use the Safety and Fitness Electronic Records (SAFER) System Company Snapshot database.
