The Lourie's building, long considered a landmark on Main Street, is poised to become one for real.
The Columbia Planning Commission on Monday voted unanimously to designate the 125-year-old building an important historic structure.
With City Council approval, the landmark designation will give it some protection from demolition in the future. And the status will help new owner Mast General Store leverage local, state and federal historic tax credits and abatements.
North Carolina-based Mast plans to open a store on the first floor and renovate the upper levels into apartments.
