Clemson week can begin now, and South Carolina could hardly have more momentum after Saturday’s performance.
The No. 12 Gamecocks scored more touchdowns than Coastal Carolina scored points in a 70-7 win that featured the most points a Steve Spurrier-coached South Carolina team has ever scored.
Eight Gamecocks scored, six players took snaps at quarterback and South Carolina finished with more than 600 yards. The Chanticleers, who clinched a spot in the Football Championship Subdivision during the loss thanks to a win by Liberty over Charleston Southern, had scored in every quarter this season entering the game but managed only two scores.
“Obviously we had Coastal out-manned and out-sized,” South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said. “I’m proud of our guys.”
Quarterback Connor Shaw became the winningest signal-caller in school history with his 25th win.
Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles, safety Brison Williams and tailback Mike Davis sat out with injuries.
The Gamecocks improved to 9-2 heading into next week’s regular season ending game against No. 7 Clemson, which improved to 10-1 with a big win of its own over The Citadel.
