Record cold is likely late Tuesday and early Wednesday, as the second of the mid-November cold fronts draws extraordinarily cold and dry air to the Midlands. There’s a good chance Columbia could record its earliest November temperature in the teens on Wednesday.
The official forecast for Columbia Metropolitan Airport calls for a low of 20, according to the National Weather Service. Lows in the teens are expected in many parts of the Midlands. The forecast low has dropped during the past few days as it has become clear the air will not only be extremely dry but also very still, according to the weather service.
The earliest in the fall that Columbia’s official temperature has hit the teens is Nov. 20, back in 1951. The record for Nov. 19 is 22, set in 1891 and very likely to be broken on Wednesday.
As the temperature begins to drop late Tuesday, the Nov. 18 record of 24 could fall before midnight.
