Downtown Columbia is getting ready for bodies – on its streets, in its businesses and in its beds. Increasingly, folks won’t be here for a business lunch or a night out on the town. People by the thousands will be making downtown their home.
Where will everyone live?
The landscape of downtown increasingly is trending toward mixed-use complexes, with living and entertainment options all rolled into single locations. Condos even could make a comeback.
Plus, the student housing boom doesn’t appear to be slowing down, with more than 3,000 beds planned for the corridor stretching west from Assembly Street to Huger Street.
• Downtown living makes sense for college students, young professionals and empty-nesters – but does anybody else want to live here? Better schools and public safety will decide that question.
• Will the student housing market grow overcrowded or can USC keep filling the beds?
• Who will pay to live in the new places? What about the city’s already under-served affordable housing needs?
