Man convicted on drug charges faces stiff sentence

A federal jury has convicted a man police say intended to deliver drugs to an undercover informant in Columbia, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Malik X. Shakur, also known as Willie Lamb, 39, of Columbia, was convicted of conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute marijuana, cocaine and crack cocaine, a press release from the office said.

Sentencing will occur later. Federal prosecutors said that because prior felony drug convictions mean Shakur faces a maximum penalty of 30 years on each count.

  300 cell phones donated to domestic abuse victims

More than 300 cell phones were given Friday to Sistercare, which operates several battered women’s shelters, according to a city of Columbia press release.

The phones will be given to victims for use in emergencies.
