At 2:47 p.m. Wednesday, Mike Love shocked his listeners: He said goodbye.
Love, the host of “Mike Love Radio,” announced he was leaving The Big DM 101.3-FM after eight years, laid off by Inner City Broadcasting, the station’s owner.
“The radio business is just crazy,” said Love, also the station’s program director. “Somebody had to bite the dust. They’re eliminating the position.”
The Big DM, an urban adult contemporary station and currently No. 1 in the market, won the previous four quarterly Arbitron ratings books.

“We’re the envy of radio stations throughout Columbia,” Love said.
Cynthia Hardy, host of “On Point With Cynthia Hardy,” an urban affairs program on The Big DM, said Love will be missed.
“He’s got that big-market flavor,” she said. “You kind of like that swagger in your radio guy.”
Love didn’t know what programming would replace his show in the 1 to 3 p.m. weekday slot.
Efforts to reach Steve Patterson, Inner City’s general manager, were unsuccessful.
