The Carolina Stadium got under way with a bang Saturday as the Gamecocks defeated Duquesne 13-0 in front of a sell-out crowd of more than 8,100.
Sophomore right-hander Sam Dyson got the victory, going five innings, giving up one hit and striking out six. USC pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and one hit for the game.
Junior outfielder DeAngelo Mack, getting his first chance to be an everyday player, hit the first-ever home run in the new stadium, a two-run blast in the fourth inning. Catcher Justin Dalles followed in the fifth inning with a solo home run.
A Parker Bangs RBI single provided the stadium's first run.
